Details

Sema Doc is a mobile application through which M-Pesa and M-Shwari subscribers can access medical facilities (e.g. such as hospitals, pharmacies and clinics) and health loans using their mobile phones; in a partnership between Safaricom, Commercial Bank of Africa (CBA) and m-health service provider Hello Doctor. The mobile app’s health account dubbed Sema Doc Health Account acts as the digital wallet to save for health emergencies through M-Pesa and M-Shwari.

Through Sema-Doc, patients can also consult directly with doctors and other healthcare providers through the phone, get a diagnosis and prescription without  visiting the hospital. The app works on both smart and some feature (basic) phones.

The app will also offer health tips for terminal illnesses such as diabetes and cancer.

To benefit from the scheme, one pays a monthly premium of Kes 300 via M-Pesa. The subscriber is then covered for up to Kes 10, 000 for unexpected medical expenses, and a single night in-patient cover of Kes 5,000 underwritten by Cannon Assurance.

Some of the medical conditions approved for diagnosis and treatment under the health scheme include: heat disease, malaria, insomnia, asthma, diabetes, gout, cold sores and allergies.
