The Freedom from Fistula Foundation was established in 2008 to provide free fistula treatment. This includes referral and treatment in Nairobi, as well as at fistula camps. Freedom from fistula (FFF) works with several of Kenya’s largest tertiary hospitals to delivery free fistula treatment. Through its work, FFF identified that transport costs present a financial access barrier that often delays or prevents women from seeking care, thereby placing women at risk and complicating fistula care. In order to improve timely access to care, FFF partnered with M-Pesa to send patients money for emergency transport. Once a patient is screened via phone and determined to need financial support for transport to facilities in Nairobi, FFF will send funds for transport through M-Pesa.
